Law

There is a dedicated law reading room (The Anson Room) in which are various English law reports; Halsbury's Laws, Statutes, and Statutory Instruments; and a textbook collection classified into the following subject areas:

  • Criminal law
  • English law
  • Jurisprudence
  • Legal history
  • Roman & canon law

There are also Commonwealth and European Law Reports, and textbooks on aspects of European and international law.

All the law collections are fully catalogued onto OLIS; a more detailed guide to the Law Collection is available from the Library.

History

The military history collection is significant: especially well-represented are Napoleonic, post-1945 history, foreign affairs, strategic studies, and naval history. A more detailed guide is available in the Library.

The British, French, and ecclesiastical history collections are particulary strong, and well supported by printed primary sources. A more detailed guide is available in the Library.

The Emden Collection

In 2012, All Souls Library agreed to accept on permanent loan from St Edmund Hall the substantial Emden Naval History Collection of some 2000 books. These items are all catalogued on SOLO and may be consulted in the Library by registered Readers, and by others by appointment.

Other Subjects

  • Bibliography and the history of the book
  • Art and architecture
  • Classics (including a full set of Loeb texts)
  • French literature (including the ongoing publication of Voltaire's works)
  • History of science

There are also supporting collections of economic, social, and cultural history; biography; philosophy; politics; sociology; theology; topography and travel; and international history.

Most, but not all, of these collections are fully catalogued onto OLIS.

Periodicals

The Library subscribes to a large number of law and history periodicals (some of which are available electronically via Oxford University e-Journals). Lists of the law and history journals are available from the Library. Note that the periodicals have not been catalogued onto OLIS.
